Since the first course opened its gates in 2011, Prince Edward Island has propelled itself to the world stage and has come to be known as a disc golfer’s paradise. With 18 courses and another opening in spring 2025, PEI should consider changing its nickname from “Garden of the Gulf” to “Garden of Disc Golf."
What sets the Island apart from its Maritime neighbours is the relative closeness of the courses, particularly its five championship-level ones. With the average round of disc golf taking between 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on skill level and terrain, keen disc golf enthusiasts could easily play all five championship courses in one day…with a bit of careful travel planning and a propensity not to lose any discs along the way.
Where to start?
Red Sands Shore
Just 10 minutes from the Confederation Bridge, Huck It Disc Golf in Middleton is PEI’s second course to open. Interestingly, it earned the right to co-host the Canadian nationals in its first year of operation in 2018. Since then, a second course named Chuck It has opened on the property which features all par 3s, making it perfect for beginners or casual players looking for a quick round of fun shots and skill development. Also at Huck It is the newly-opened, Throw Your Own Way Pro Shop, with a wide selection of discs and hot beverages. With so much going for it and its year-round availability, it is no surprise that Huck It is a favorite disc golf destination for Islanders and visitors alike in all seasons.
Nestled in the hills of the Red Sands Shore region is Rose Valley Disc Golf. This course is unique among Island courses in that it is home to the Barnone Brewery which helped earn it a spot in the 2024 Top 10 Brewery Disc Golf Courses in the world. For those wanting a more relaxed entry into disc golf, the Rose Bud course is a good place to start. Its nine holes weave around the front half of Rose Valley’s sprawling field.
In the scenic rolling hills of Bonshaw, the number one ranked course in Canada, Hillcrest Farm, operates from May until early November.
Charlottetown area
If you want to stick around Charlottetown, visit the 9-hole courses at Charlottetown Rural High School, Stratford Town Hall and the Fox Hole in Cornwall. These courses are great for beginners and all three offer free disc rentals.
The capital city is also a great place to get geared up. The Island Disc Golf Company is PEI’s very own disc golf store for all your needs, beginner and pro alike. Or, pop into MacQueen’s Bike Shop for disc golf gear—and, as the name suggests, bikes too!
Down east
Be sure to stop at Kings Pine DiscGolfPark in Elliotvale to enjoy a game and a scenic hike through its stunning pinewood forest. Plus, do not miss Glenaladale Disc Golf on the historic Glenaladale Estate. These two gems along the Points East Coastal Drive are two of PEI’s newest courses and have quickly become favorites for their unique shots, beautiful sights and accessibility for players of all skill levels, snow
or shine.
If you want to give disc golf a shot, but do not have any equipment, do not fret! Most courses on PEI allow you to rent a bag of discs for just $2 to $3 for the day, while others allow you to borrow a bag for free.
The not-so-hidden gem
Finally, it would be remiss to talk about disc golf in PEI without mentioning the delicious pasty that is the handpie. PEI disc golf and The Handpie Company go hand in hand(pie) as the disc golfer’s favorite post-round snack for the drive home. Located in Albany, just five minutes from Huck It, no disc golf trip to PEI is truly complete without a handpie!
