Sustainable Travel A Greener Way to Explore

Sustainable Travel on PEI

Published March 17, 2025 | Tourism PEI

Visitors looking to travel mindfully will find plenty of eco-conscious options on Prince Edward Island. Whether it’s staying with a green-conscious operator, exploring breathtaking natural spaces, or enjoying locally sourced cuisine, when you opt to support our small communities and operators, you are making an impact with your travel dollars.

Stay Green

Choose places to stay that prioritize sustainability. These properties implement practices like energy efficiency, waste reduction and responsible water use to minimize their environmental impact.

Also, Forbes magazine recognized the Mysa Nordic Spa & Resort as one of 25 Transformative Travel Experiences in 2025 and the National Post listed the Nature Space Resort & Retreat Centre as one of 10 all-inclusive resorts in Canada that beat your average beach vacation.

Eco-forward food and drink

PEI’s food scene is deeply connected to the land and sea. Restaurants like FireWorks at the Inn at Bay Fortune, The Table Culinary Studio in New London and Farmacy + Fermentary in Charlottetown focus on farm-to-table dining, reducing food waste and supporting local producers. Upstreet Brewing Co. also takes sustainability seriously as the first PEI business to gain B Corp Certification.

Explore nature responsibly

From the Island Walk to the Confederation Trail and the PEI National Park, outdoor enthusiasts can embrace the art of slow travel, taking time to connect with nature and appreciate the Island’s tranquil beauty while treading lightly. Initiatives like Parks Canada’s Park Promise and PEI Parks’ forest management efforts post-Hurricane Fiona are helping to preserve cherished landscapes. Please follow Leave No Trace principles and stick to designated trails.

Join an eco-tour by Nature Space Resort to explore one of the most diverse ecosystems of PEI; identified as an Important Bird Area by Nature Canada.

Indigenous knowledge & cultural preservation

Sustainability is also about cultural preservation. Indigenous communities on PEI have long held a deep connection to the land. Experiences offered by Indigenous PEI allow travelers to learn from Mi’kmaq knowledge and support community members who honor these traditions.

Sustainable transportation

Sustainably getting around PEI is easier than ever. The province offers active transportation routes like the Confederation Trail, bike-sharing programs, EV chargers, and public transit through T3 Transit. The Charlottetown Airport is also making strides, achieving Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation in 2024.

Sustainability-focused
