It is hard to imagine given its renown, but it has was back in 1994 when the fabled Links at Crowbush Cove first opened, establishing Prince Edward Island as the preeminent golf destination in Canada.
The course hosted former Masters champions Mike Weir and Vijay Singh, who dueled at Crowbush as part of the second “Legends of Golf” event. This followed the restaging of the legendary “Duel in the Sun,” between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, amidst the red sand bunkers of Dundarave Golf Course. Unfortunately for Canadians, Weir lost a tight match to Singh. Both golfers came away with raves for Crowbush and the beauty of the island, with Singh saying he’d like to return for a PEI vacation.
“This was my first time to Prince Edward Island and I really enjoyed the trip and the golf course. Before we came, Mike had told me what a spectacular place PEI is, and what great golf courses the island has. I was glad to be able to see them for myself and I would like to be able to return for a vacation one day,” says Singh.
Both Weir and Singh praised the course as being dramatic, unique and a challenge. Truthfully Singh and Weir are only two of the multitudes of fans of the world class golf clubs Prince Edward Island has to offer; from Rodd Brudenell River Resort in the east to Rodd Mill River Golf Course and Resort in the west. While PEI tourism offers a wide array of attractions, golf has become a key drawing feature for vacationers from across Canada and the U.S.
They come in search of the spectacular seaside golf of Crowbush, classic parkland locales like Brudenell, and more recent creations, like Les Furber’s Glasgow Hills and designer Graham Cooke’s Eagles Glenn in the Cavendish area.
As Score Golf editor Bob Weeks recently noted, there are few places that offer better, more affordable golf anywhere in North America. He has a particular fondness for Crowbush and its attached Rodd resort.
“If you're looking for a complete golf getaway, then look no further than Rodd Crowbush Golf and Beach Resort,” says Weeks.
But it isn’t just media pundits and famed golf pros that are lauding what the Island has to offer.
“Needless to say PEI was a dream come true,” says Melissa from Toronto, who came to the island last year (2019) with her family of five. “We played incredible golf courses and ate incredible food.”
