What does lobster taste like?

Answer by:

Dear Mikayla,

Thank you for your question to Ask an Islander.

For many Islanders, lobster tastes like the first day of spring. It is a fresh and sweet, briny flavour. The texture of the lobster varies from the claw to the body and the tail.

If you were in my house, the claws are perfect for lobster rolls. I love chopping up the claws and dropping them in a chowder. The claws are a brighter red colour with a brilliant white meat, the red which closely matches the red lobster shells, once cooked.  Oh, how I love dunking the claw in warm butter, filled with garlic, popping it into your mouth. The claws are sweet, firm and a softer texture.

The tail meat is white and are much meatier, sweeter, firm and chewy. Lobsters do not have a fishy flavour, they are a fresh and briny bite of delight. Melt some butter, add copious amounts of diced garlic, even a shake of garlic powder, into that warm dish of butter. Let the butter sit for a while, if you can, and then reheat it. The sitting and reheating adds a great garlic flavour to the butter. The warm butter will bring out an incredible flavour, as you dunk your lobster tail into it, expect to have it drip off your chin!  Your first bite is going to want you to rush and dunk for a second bite!

As you may have noticed, I am a traditionalist when it comes to lobster, I enjoy it as is, hot garlic butter only! That doesn't mean I would turn down a Lobster Egg Benedict!

Lobster tastes like nothing else you have ever tasted, some will compare the texture somewhat to shrimp or sort of like crab, but it really tastes like a wonderful first time experience you will always remember!

Oh how I cannot wait to hear about your first taste of PEI lobster.
