What should I financially plan for in basic lodging like a hostel and food?
Hello Patricia,
What a smart traveler question, thank you for asking!
With everything we have come through these past few years, we certainly have a few new things to consider when traveling.
With COVID-19, it is good to have a plan in place, should you get sick while traveling. Knowing the rules and requirements and having a plan is really important. Whether you purchase insurance or set aside access to an emergency fund would be a good idea.
Check out park passes for the Prince Edward Island National Park, if you order early before the season opens, you may see Early Bird pricing.
If you are an Anne of Green Gables fan, there is a long list of must see items. I recommend the Green Gables site and the musical at the Confederation Centre. So, consider adding this to your financial planning list.
There are a lot of free events and activities on the Island to attend, but some may have a donation or ticket price. So, deciding on the activities on your bucket list, checking out to see if there are fees to attend, would be recommended.
Budget for Island treats, like COW's Ice Cream and Oh Fudge Potato fudge. We all deserve a treat.
It is great to check out some restaurant menus to see how much meals are and use those prices to figure out your food costs. Your choice of dining might be different than mine. As a foodie, I always check the must-go food places and budget for a meal.
A great way to spend some time, learning about the Island and the history, is to visit some of our amazing heritage sites and museums. Fees vary, but a worth the experience. Roma National Heritage Site, MacPhail's Homestead, the Potato Museum, to name a few.
Transaction fees can add up also, if you are using cash, it is best to get Canadian funds, saving transaction fees and exchange rates.
Prince Edward Island loves to see people coming, so it is free to come over the bridge or ferry to the Island, but we are sad to see you leave, so there is a fee for the ferry and/or bridge. This cost will also need to be added to your budget.
I hope that helps with your vacation planning and we look forward to seeing you!
