Is doing the Points East Coastal Drive starting in Charlottetown up Route 2 to East Point and back to Charlottetown along the east/south coast too much in a day? Looks to be 475 km.

Answer by:

Hello Bryan,

Thank you for your question to Ask An Islander.

I would recommend driving the coastal drives around the Island, but you will need more than a day.

Points East Coastal Drive is 475 km and we tend to advise visitors, this is a seven to eight-hour drive, so consider two days. Boasting over 50 beaches, this is a sea glass heaven for those who love beach combing. Lovely small harbour communities, Basin Head Fisheries Museum, Orwell Corner, farms, Roma at Three Rivers, unique nooks and crannies and even a cow or two!

Starting from Charlottetown, heading out on Route 2, there are a few great places to stop. Glenaladale Estate, Blooming Point is an incredible beach, Mount Stewart is a lovely small community, Morell have a couple of amazing food trucks, head to Red Head Harbour to see the mussel boats, and then head to Saint Peter's. Now here, I would like to encourage you to go to Route 313 and visit the Greenwich Interpretation Centre. Return to Rte 16 and visit Naufrage Harbour. The Elmira Train Station, East Point Lighthouse, Basin Head, Souris are all points of interest. Then drive Highway 2 until you find Highway 4 and check out Cardigan, Georgetown, Roma at Three Rivers and Garden of the Gulf Museum in Montague.

From here you could continue on and stop at Panmure Island, Murray River, Wood Islands. Point Prim Light House, Orwell Corner Historical Village, Selkirk Scottish Cultural and Heritage Centre, and so much more, before heading back to Charlottetown.

Enjoy the local fish and chips, search for the best lobster rolls, slurp an oyster or two and don't hesitate to explore! We have many wonderful museums, cultural & historical sites. Enjoy our public gardens. Visit the lighthouses. Book a tour.

Enjoy your stay!
