Does PEI have black flies? And what months or time of day are the mosquitoes the worst? Are there parts of the island where the insects are the worst?Thank you

Hi Diann,

Thank you for contacting Ask an Islander! I hate to say it, but yes, PEI does have black flies. Black flies tend to be the worst from May to late June and like to hang out in rural areas the most. One great thing though is that PEI can be fairly windy and that seems to help a lot!

Mosquitos are another nuisance! They usually start in early June and hang out until August but again, the wind is very helpful. These fellows also like to hang out in rural areas but can be spotted everywhere. I find mosquitos tend to come out at dusk for a few hours and then they go to bed.

Each year seems to be different, last year I didn't mind the blackflies but the mosquitos seemed worse. A lot of communities are working to control these pesky creatures so don't let them keep you from coming to visit!

Take care,

Valerie
