Can you really buy lobster off a fisherman's boat? What ports are more active in August?
Hi Robert,
That's a great question!
There are two lobster seasons on Prince Edward Island each year, one in the spring (May - June) and one in the fall (mid-August to mid-October). If you visit during these times you can get lobster right off the boat as long as the fisher has a peddler's permit. In most harbours the fishers bring the lobster to buyers where they unload them from the boat. Many of these lobster buyers are equipped to sell directly to consumers so feel free to approach them to see whether this is an option.
If you are looking for a more hands-on experience there are some fishers that have lobster related experiences, one that comes to mind would be Kenny McRae from Waypoint ’04 Marine Adventures who has a Lobster Adventure where it’s all you can eat. Also, please check out Experience PEI for more information.
It’s also important to note that there are also a lot of restaurants that get their lobster directly from fishers daily. Some of the best restaurants know their lobster suppliers by name and will be more than happy to put you in contact with them.
Good luck with your lobster hunt!
