We'll be driving across Confederation Bridge the end of September. Can you tell me the number of lanes? Are there pull off lanes?

Good morning Sheree;

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander with questions about the Confederation Bridge, the longest in the world crossing ice-covered water (in winter) at 12.9 kilometres (8 miles). Interestingly, it continues to endure as one of Canada’s top engineering achievements of the 20th century.

Let me assure you that driving across the bridge is very safe. The bridge is 1.1 metres (3.6 feet) in height with a barrier wall that is one of the highest in the world. Only those users traveling in higher vehicles such as full-sized SUVs, vans, trucks, and buses will be able to see the water below while crossing.

As you can see from the video below, there are two lanes for traffic; one in each direction. A wide shoulder provides room for a vehicle to pull over in the event of an accident or flat. The bridge is under full surveillance 24 hours a day and has a dedicated towing service. To request assistance, contact Bridge Control using the emergency telephones located on the bridge light poles or call directly at 902.437.7349. For more information, visit ConfederationBridge.com

If you haven't done so already, download our 2023 visitor’s guide or pick up a hard copy when you arrive at the airport or the Visitor Information Centre located at the foot of the bridge in Borden-Carleton. You can always stay in touch by signing up for the Tourism PEI newsletter which includes details on upcoming festivals and events and recipes too!

Have a fabulous vacation! Thank you for choosing Prince Edward Island.
